Chicago, IL, (February 20, 2019) — LanzaTech has been named to Fast Company’s prestigious annual list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies for 2019. Ranked #1 in the Energy Category, the disruptive Carbon Recycling company entered the top 50 at #27.
The list honors the businesses making the most profound impact on both industry and culture, showcasing a variety of ways to thrive in today’s volatile world. Half of the companies on this year’s MIC 50 list are appearing for the first time.
The last 12 months have seen LanzaTech begin operations on the world’s first commercial facility converting pollution to ethanol. Unlike traditional fermentation, LanzaTech ferments gases, not sugar. The resulting ethanol can be used as a fuel or to make other products that would otherwise come from fossil petroleum. In this first commercial case, the emissions from a Shougang Steel Mill in China have been converted to millions of gallons of ethanol using the LanzaTech process.

Beyond ethanol, LanzaTech produced the world’s first jet fuel from waste steel mill emissions, showing the world, that industry can make not only make materials to build components of a plane but the production emissions can be used to fuel the plane! The world’s first flight powered by captured carbon took off in October 2018 with a Virgin Atlantic Boeing 747 flying from Orlando to London.
